The University Grants Commission warned the universities and colleges against retaining the original documents of the faculty members. The act of retaining original documents is similar to denying them their rights.  

The University Grants commission warned the universities and colleges against retaining the original documents of the faculty members. It is being said that the universities after offering the faculty members the service contract they retain their original documents. The faculty members face a lot of trouble in getting back their documents and many have to let go of better job prospects that are being offered to them.

UGC secretary Rajnish Jain stated that “it has come to their notice that many universities, colleges collect original academic certificates, mark sheets, etc. at the time of issuing contracts to teachers and then continue to retain these documents with them”.

The higher education regulator conferred “The teachers face a tough time recovering their documents from their employer educational institutions when they leave their job. Many have to forego their better prospects as they are not able to recover their documents in time”.

The higher education regulator added that they have taken a ‘serious view on these matters’. Further, it emphasized that no employing higher education institutions should keep the original documents of their faculty members in their possession. The act of retaining original documents is similar to denying them their rights.  

‘Mandatory’ Issue of Employment Contract To Faculty Members

The higher education regulator has asked all the universities, colleges, and other higher education regulator to ‘mandatorily’ issue employment contracts to the faculty members. Also, asked the employing higher education institutions to clearly indicate all the terms and conditions as per the specified standards of UGC and other statutory bodies.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the technical education regulator, also gave a similar warning a year ago, referring to complaints it received from the faculty members. The complaints were regarding institutes retaining the original documents of educators as well as the students. It was noted that this was against standards and warned that strict action can be taken against the institutions practicing so.

Also, AICTE asked the faculty members to give notice at least one month before leaving the job in mid-session keeping in mind the interest of the students.
