IIT DELHI’S INVENTION TO CONTROL OVER SPEEDING with Smart Traffic Monitoring System

In the past over speeding has taken many lives in Delhi alone. This led to Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi to invent something that could counter the menace. It has successfully done so and installed a Smart Traffic Monitoring System in its campus, which identifies speeding vehicles through the name plates with the help of a camera and later on sends a warning message to the drivers. The campus has also put up Smart Notice Boards – digital boards where notices are filtered as per the target audience.

BALKRISHNAN’S TAKE

M Balakrishnan Deputy Director (Strategy & Planning) of IIT Delhi said that the institute has successfully installed these traffic monitoring systems with a mechanism for identifying speeding cars. At present one camera has been installed near the hospital to gather this data. If the speeding car is of the institute’s teacher or student, they are forwarded a SMS, alerting them about the excess speed of their car. He was speaking at the press preview of IIT Delhi’s first ever Industry.

SPECIALITY OF THE EVENT

This event is being organised to encourage collaboration between industry and academia in which projects and discussions on five themes – environment, defense, affordable healthcare, smart cities and energy will take place. Projects and innovations such as Smart Traffic Monitoring System and Smart Notice Boards will be the highlight of this event. Stalwarts like V K Saraswat from NITI Aayog, Industrialist Kumal Mangalam Birla and Nuclear Scientists Anil Kakodkar will grace the event.

ABOUT THE SMART TRAFFIC SYSTEM

The Smart Traffic Monitoring System is the result of collaboration with Vehant Technologies – a start up by an IIT alumnus. Elaborating on the collaboration, Balakrishanan said, that they want to further expand with the present single camera installed at IIT hospital which collects all this data. Since SMSes cannot be sent to speeding cab drivers, their numbers are flashed on a board near the main gate, to make them aware.” Till now, there are seven boards. People have to feed their details to the central server which taken note of by other boards. They’re filtered in the sense that if it’s a notice pertaining to hostels, it will be displayed only in that area. The notices keep rotating, and are automatically deleted once the event is over,” said Balakrishnan.

Apart from this posters and projects on waste water management, conversion of coal to methanol for energy, development of affordable biotech medicines and soft armour development would also be the highlight on Industry Day.
