How to Choose the Best Optional Subject for UPSC Civil Services Exam

Union Public Service Commission will be conducted the Civil Services preliminary examination 2023 on May 28, 2023, and the mains exam will be conducted on September 15, 2023.
The candidates appearing in Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2023 will be required to indicate information such as the detail of Centres for Civil Services (Main) Examination and Indian Forest Service (Main) Examination and Optional subject to be selected for the examination.
Selecting an optional subject for the UPSC main examination is very crucial and important too. The main written examination consists of seven papers and two papers of them are for optional subjects which are of 250 marks each. It means the weightage of the optional subject is almost one-third of the total 1750 marks.
In General Studies papers out of 250 marks, candidates score around 130 to 150 marks, however, if a candidate is well prepared for the optional subjects then out of 500 he/she can score 300 to 350 marks while in previous years some toppers scored up to 360 marks. Therefore, it is very crucial to choose an optional subject for the UPSC civil services main examination
Out of the 25 listed subjects, the UPSC gives the opportunity to candidates for selecting one of them. The scope of the syllabus for optional subject papers for the examination is of the honours degree 1evel i.e. a level higher than the bachelor’s degree and lower than the master’s degree. In the case of Engineering, Medical Science and law, the level corresponds to the bachelor’s degree.
Now let’s talk about how you should choose your optional subject. Most importantly the candidate should choose the subject that interests them like if you are a student of engineering but literature fascinates you then go with that also the subject which you have been studying for three-four years can opt for that too.
Another factor for choosing the optional subject could be the potential of scoring maximum marks there are some subjects known to have a high scoring potential.
One of the reasons for choosing an optional subject could be the overlapping of the syllabus. As you would be preparing for a General Studies paper, you can choose one of the subjects required to prepare for GS. It can help in preparing for both the optional and the general studies papers simultaneously.
Candidates should also check the availability of study material for the optional subject they wish to opt for. If study material is easily available then you can go for it.
Another factor can be coaching or help available or not. No matter how intelligent and laborious you are but still you need proper guidance and planning which you can get through coaching so make coaching available for the subject you are going to opt for. Coaching can provide candidates with structured guidance, study material, and practice tests to help them prepare effectively for the exam.
Also, before finalising the optional subject check previous years’ success rate. Last year’s question papers and interviews of successful candidates. Choosing a subject that has a high success rate can boost a candidate’s confidence and increase their chances of success.
