Gour Banga University Vice chancellor Resigns

The vice-chancellor of Gour Banga University, Malda, Gopal Chandra Mishra has resigned from his post.

MISHRA’S LETTER

Mishra confirmed having sent his letter to the state Higher Education secretary and told reporters he could not work in the present situation prevailing at the academic institution.

WHAT GOVT SAYS

“Yes I sent the letter last night as I was not able to discharge my responsibilities in the present situations,” he said.

Commenting on Mishra’s decision, West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said, “If there were allegations of irregularities in the institution, he should have taken responsibility in controlling that.”

“Neither he did so nor approached me to discuss whatever problems he was facing. Even before tendering his resignation he did not communicate with me,” Chatterjee said. He added, “We cannot stop him if he intends to step down. But we have reports of certain anomalies and even if he discontinues in the vice-chancellor’s post, a comprehensive inquiry will be conducted.”

REASON BEHIND THE RESIGNATION

Mishra had resigned following agitation by members of the youth wing of a political party at the university campus on November 13 midnight against him.

The students’ wing of that party launched a counter-stir in the campus alleging there was deliberate attempt to lower the dignity of VC’s post.

The agitators alleged certain irregularities had taken place in the running of the university including anomaly in hostel accommodation in recent times.

For the past few days, the students had been regularly demonstrating at the varsity over a number of issues, ranging from delay in the publication of results to some alleged anomalies in the administration. On Wednesday evening, they withdrew the agitation after learning that Misra had resigned.

On Thursday, however, they again demonstrated and submitted a memorandum to Rajib Putatunda, the officiating registrar, on their demands.
