World-Class Teacher-Training University Coming up in Delhi, Bill Introduced in the Assembly

Manish Sisodia: Government to Recommend School Reopening in DDMA Meeting

A world-class teacher training university will soon be coming up in Delhi. The Delhi Teachers University Bill was introduced in the Delhi Assembly by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday.

Manish Sisodia said that Delhi Teachers University will be the first of its kind in the country to produce world-class teachers.

He said that the basic objective of Delhi Teachers University is to set such standards in teacher training that when it came to teacher education institutes anywhere in the country, people would be citing the example of Delhi Teachers University.

‘Not just a BEd institution’

Institutions like IITs for engineering, IIMs for management, and IIMC for journalism were formed in the country but no such institute was made for teachers’ training,” Sisodia said.

“While working on education, the Kejriwal government understood the seriousness of this matter and now such an institute is going to be built in Delhi which will create teachers for the country who will give a different status to education,” he added. Presenting the bill in the house, he said that Delhi Teachers University will not just be a BEd institution but has a vision behind it.

Today, when it comes to engineering, there are thousands of engineering institutes in the country, but people take the name of IIT because IITs have not only worked to produce excellent engineers but have also created a standard for engineering studies,

Similarly, IIMs have not only done the job of awarding MBA degrees but have also set the standard for management studies,” he added.

“This is the reason that the students who came out of IIMs are running big companies of the world today,” he said.

Sisodia said that to date no such institute has been created for teacher training in the country which can set the standards for teacher education.

What courses will the Delhi Teachers University run?

At the Delhi Teachers University, excellent parameters will be created for pre-service as well as in-service teacher training.

Along with the 4-year Integrated BEd program, regular BEd courses will also be run here.

Along with this, a 1-year diploma program will also be run here for those to want to become teachers and have a passion for teaching but are unable to officially join a teaching career due to certain rules.

Delhi Teachers University infrastructure plans

The Delhi Teachers University will be spread over 12 acres of land.

It will have a lecture hall, a digital lab, and a library with world-class facilities.

The four-story main university block will be divided into two parts — the administrative floor and the education floor.

There will be an administration office on the ground floor, while classes will be conducted on the first, second, and third floors.

Presently the university block is ready for commissioning and other blocks of the university will also be completed soon.

Tackling teacher shortage in India

The deputy chief minister said that there were talented teachers in the country but there was a dearth of training institutes.

Presenting the figures further, Sisodia said that there was a shortage of teachers in 3 lakh schools and a shortage of about 11 lakh teachers in the entire country.

The Delhi Teachers University will work to fill this gap and every year, thousands of professional teachers will emerge from here who will work to strengthen the education system,” the deputy CM said.

He said that the number of seats in Delhi Teachers University would be increased every year keeping in view the needs of the teachers.

In the context of Delhi, he said that the Delhi government had constructed thousands of new classrooms in the last few years and created posts for about 15 thousand teachers.
