UGC can reconsider its decision of starting the academic calendar by November. As the COVID-19 cases are continuously rising and the universities and colleges are still finding it difficult to hold the examinations as per the new UGC guidelines.
University Grants Commission (UGC), the higher education regulator, can reconsider its decision of beginning its new academic calendar by November. The new UGC guidelines asked all the universities to conduct its final year exams by the end of September.
Due to hike in the cases of COVID-19 many states have objected to the implementation of UGC guidelines.
Also, the universities and colleges are finding it difficult to hold examinations as the pandemic has forced the universities and colleges to remain shut.
Previous Recommendations on Academic calendar to UGC
Earlier, a committee headed by the Central University of Haryana vice-chancellor R.C. Kuhad wrote to UGC. The committee recommended that the admissions of undergraduate courses be completed by the end of October. And the new session of UG courses to begin by November.
The committee also suggested UGC complete the admission process of postgraduate courses by the end of November and commence the new session from December.
The MHRD and UGC appointed Kuhad to give recommendations on the academic calendar for the session 2020-21. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, a lot of reforms have been made so far in this regard. The panel earlier recommended the session to begin from Sept-October.
New Recommendation to UGC
With no improvement in the COVID-19 situation, the panel has sent revised its recommendation to the UGC. In the upcoming days, it is expected the UGC might come up with a new decision.
“The UGC had in an emergent meeting on July 6 discussed the part of the report about exams. Most of the suggestions were accepted. However, the committee has also given revised dates for the academic calendar. The UGC is yet to take a call on the revised dates. The panel has suggested that the session for Bachelor {degree} programs begin from November 2 and Masters programs from December 1.”
