    NDRI Convocation 2023: President hails the contribution of women dairy entrepreneurs in making India self-reliant in milk production



    KARNAL: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday hailed the women dairy entrepreneurs for their contribution in making India self-reliant in milk production, adding that there is a need to encourage the women entrepreneurs by providing them equal opportunities like loans, training and market access.
    The President was addressing the students at National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) Karnal during its 19th convocation.
    On this occasion, as many as 545 students were awarded B.tech, postgraduate and doctorate degrees. She also presented gold medals to 6 meritorious students.
    The President acknowledged the contribution of NDRI in the white revolution and quality education. She also lauded the efforts of NDRIs in the cloning area.
    She said,” NDRI has achieved new milestones by producing clones of cows and buffaloes. Animal cloning can play a key role in faster multiplying elite animals and the conservation of endangered breeds.”
    The President urged the students to contribute significantly to the progress of the nation and become entrepreneurs and create employment for others. There are immense possibilities of growth in this field, said Droupadi Murmu.
    She said that India is the largest producer of milk in the world as it accounts for about 22 percent of the global milk production. The dairy sector contributes about 5 percent to the country’s GDP and provides livelihood to 8 crore families directly and indirectly from the dairy industry.
    “Women have a 70% representation in India’s dairy sector. It is a matter of pride that today more than one-third of the degree awardees are girls. The dairy sector holds special importance in making women self-reliant and in bringing changes in their social and economic status,” Droupadi Murmu pointed out.
    Droupadi Murmu lauded the sportspersons of Haryana for bringing laurels to the state as well as the nation. Besides, Haryana also has a good representation in the Armed Forces. Due to its healthy and delicious food, Haryana is called ‘Desha Mein Desh Hariyaana Jahaan Doodh-Dahee Ka Khana’.
    Haryana ranks second in terms of milk production in the country, says Governor
    Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatraya said,” NDRI has a rich history of excellence in research and education in dairy science, animal husbandry and allied areas. It is a matter of pride that Haryana ranks second in terms of milk production in the country.”
    He said that there are many challenges before the sector like climate change, rising input costs, the emergence of new diseases and a lack of awareness about animal welfare measures. He urged students to find a solution to these problems.
    CM assures to provide loans to youth interested to run Dairy business
    Speaking on the occasion, Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal said that the state government will provide loans to unemployed youths interested to run Dairy Industry.
    The Chief Minister said that the availability of milk in the country is 444 grams per person, whereas, in Haryana, the availability of milk per person per day is 1127 grams.
    “Today Haryana is third in milk production in the country, but I am hopeful that due to the hard work of the farmers, the State will soon overtake Punjab and other states to become number one in terms of highest milk production,” said Manohar Lal.
    On this occasion, Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala, and Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Kailash Choudhary, NDRI director and vice chancellor Dheer Singh were present.

    National Dairy Mela 2023: NDRI to organize three-day National Dairy Mela from April 8



    KARNAL: After a gap of around 3 years, National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal is going to organize a three-day National Dairy Mela from April 8 to 10. During the mela, a large number of high-pedigree dairy animals will be participating in various milk yield and breed competitions.
    The NDRI authority is expecting that more than 50000 dairy farmers and other stakeholders from various parts of the country will take part in this event.
    Dheer Singh, Director and Vice Chancellor of the institute said that this mela will be inaugurated by Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare.
    He said that the Mela is a mega event and is a part of Century Year Celebration of NDRI and provides an opportunity to showcase the technological developments, package of practices developed by the Institute and to create awareness among the dairy farmers regarding certain emerging issues.
    He said that all dairy stakeholders including research and development organizations, private companies and progressive farmers will exhibit their products/technologies.
    Singh informed that about 100 stalls will be there in which many start-ups and youth will display their products/technology.
    He also said that due to covid-19 and other circumstances, the mela could not be organized for the past 3 years.
    Director further said that over the 100 years NDRI has contributed a lot towards milk production and development of new breeds of cattle like Karan Swiss and Karan Fries. The cloning technology has reached to new heights with a grand success of cloning of both buffalo and Gir animals.
    Besides, NDRI has now a well-developed referral laboratory for checking milk adulterations and have also developed various paper strips for checking pesticides, adulterants, etc. in milk.
    He added that about 80% of all dairy graduates in India have either studied or have been trained in the National Dairy Research Institute. Now there is 6% growth in milk production but efforts are being made not only to increase milk productivity but also the milk quality to meet International Standards.
