Manipal Welcomes Indian MBBS Aspirants to its Malaysia Campus

India has witnessed a rapid growth in the number of students aspiring to be a doctor, one of the oldest and most respected professions. We can all agree that to shape a career in medicine, one needs to possess strong decision-making skills. The first decision any aspirant needs to take is which college is best for them, one that can support their dreams, give them global recognition, and help them raise the bar. The Manipal Education and Medical Group is one such organization that allows students to turn their dreams into reality. With a legacy of 68-years, Manipal is not just a household name but is also one of the most sought-after medical institutions.

With a growing number of students choosing to go abroad to complete their medical studies, Manipal Education and Medical Group welcomes students to join the MBBS program at Manipal University College Malaysia (MUCM).

“MUCM looks forward to welcoming students from India into our MBBS program. You will be following in the footsteps of many excellent high achievers who have gone on to make their mark around the world. We look forward to guiding you all the way through”, said Dr. Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of MUCM, on welcoming future doctors from India.

The history of Manipal, KMC & MUCM, along with the agreement between both the governments

Kasturba Medical College (KMC), which is India’s first private medical college is from the house of Manipal and is one of the most sought-after medical colleges by MBBS aspirants. Along with KMC, the Manipal Education Group also has reputed medical campuses in Malaysia, Nepal, and Antigua.

MUCM was established in 1997 in Malaysia as Melaka-Manipal Medical College (MMMC). In January 2021, MMMC was upgraded to University College. Thus, Manipal University College Malaysia is the result of a long-standing and fruitful relationship between MMMC and the Malaysian Government to address the nation’s education needs by providing quality, affordable medical education while meeting all the requirements of the regulatory bodies. With this upgrade, MUCM will now have the authority to confer her own degrees, and the college can now open its doors to students from India as well.

The national aspiration was for Malaysia to be a leading hub for education in the region, and this was aligned to Manipal’s charter of providing quality medical education at an affordable price. This led to the signing of an agreement in New Delhi in 1993 between the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), and the college was witnessed by both the Prime Ministers of Malaysia and India.

MUCM’s contribution to the healthcare sector in Malaysia

Since MUCM’s inception, over 10,000 doctors have been delivered to both the Malaysian and overseas international health systems, with many alumni progressing successfully into specialist careers of their choosing. One of the distinguished alumni, Dr. Arun Arunasalam (Graduate year 2003), led a team of urological surgeons from Serdang Hospital in removing a sizable renal tumor, which is believed to be one of the largest in the world.

With role models such as Dr. Arun as mentors, existing students are guided to find their true paths before graduation as they are continuously exposed to the real lives of doctors, researchers, and public health individuals through the College’s annual Postgraduate Fair and monthly Seminars and Exhibitions.
