2 Indian Universities Made it To The List of The World’s Top 400 Universities: THE Rankings

Only two India Universities made it to the list of the world’s top 400 universities rankings by THE.

On Wednesday UK-based Times Higher Education (THE) released the World University Rankings 2021. Only 2 India Universities made it to the list of the world’s top 400 universities.

While India saw a record 63 institutions qualify for the Rankings, with an extra 14 universities since a year ago. The number is more than any other nation or region. But this year, there is almost no to cheer about the results.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc ) Bengaluru and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, are the two Indian universities that made it to the world’s top 400 universities list. While IISc has been placed in the 301-350 groupings, and IIT Ropar is in the 351-400 bracket.

In the last year’s release of the World University Rankings, three of the Indian universities had qualified. Besides IISC Bengaluru and IIT Ropar, IIT Indore was the other institute that qualified for the ranking. While IIT Indore this year finds itself in the 401-500 section. 7 Indian Universities Boycotted THE Rankings 2021

This year the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings are more fascinating, because, India’s best seven IITs have boycotted THE University Rankings 2021. They have expressed worries about the transparency of THE Rankings.

Without the marquee schools having participated in the rankings, a couple of youthful IITs and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IISERs), King George Medical College made it to the 601-800 grouping.

The Times Higher Education in reply to an email query said “We believe that the older IITs non-participation is detrimental to India’s position on the world’s higher education stage at a time where the government’s New Education Policy is being launched and the country clearly looks to internationalize as many of its local neighbors in Asia have already successfully done,”.

All around the world, more than 1,500 universities from 93 countries were ranked. The Oxford University of the UK topped the list, trailed by Stanford University and Harvard University. In Asia, China’s Tsinghua University was declared the best in the continent with a global position of 20.
