Bhubaneswar: President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to attend the 12th Convocation of the Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University (MSCB University), formerly North Orissa University, at Baripada in Mayurbhanj district on May 9.
Sampada Mehta, private secretary to the President of India, in a letter to MSCB University’s vice-chancellor Santosh Kumar Tripathy said that the President will be pleased to grace the convocation at 10am-11am on May 9 at Baripada.
On April 5, the university had requested the President to attend its convocation as chief guest and deliver the convocation address on a suitable date convenient to the President.
“We are happy that the President will visit our university and deliver a convocation address. We are geared up to complete the preparation for the convocation in time. We will try to make the convocation a memorable one,” said Tripathy.
He said the university is planning to install a bust of President Droupadi Murmu in the university campus. “We have also requested the President’s office to grant permission for this,” he added.
Students of 28 departments of the university will get degrees at the convocation. More than 50 PhD students will get their degrees too. The institution has decided to give honoris causa degrees to five eminent personalities. “So far we have not decided the names. We are in a process to choose the names,” said the vice-chancellor.
The President’s office has requested that draft minute-to-minute programme, dais plan, sample invitation card of the function may be forwarded through the Odisha chief secretary to deputy military secretary to the President to finalise the details.
The university, around 100km away from Murmu’s village Uparbeda in Mayurbhanj district, recently got A grade from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). It was established by the Odisha government on July 13, 1998.
On February 10, she had attended the second convocation of her alma mater Rama Devi Women’s University Bhubaneswar.
