Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of studying in mother tongue or local language. Also assured that the new NEP 2020 will place on bar on learning any language.
On Friday while addressing the conclave on ‘Education in 21st Century’ under the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi indicated that the formal roadmap for NEP 2020 is ready to be implemented in 2022. The conclave was being organized by the Ministry of Education.
The National Education Policy (NEP 2020) is the first education Policy of the 21st Century. The policy was being released on 29th July 2020. The new education policy came after 34 years of the previous education policy in 1986. The New Education Policy 2020 is aimed at bringing major reforms in school education as well as higher education.
At the conclave, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of studying in mother tongue or local language. Under NEP 2020 the usage of mother tongue or local language for teaching students at least till class 5th is stated. Many academicians also argued that usage of mother tongue or local language as a medium of instruction is undesirable for higher education.
PM: Any Language Can Be Used As Medium Of Instruction
Prime minister also assured during the conclave that new National Educational Policy will place on bar on learning any language.
PM Modi conferred “After the NEP came, there has been much discussion on what will be the language of instruction… language is the medium of education, not entire education itself. People caught in too much of bookish knowledge often fail to grasp this distinction. Whatever language the child can learn easily should be the medium of instruction”.
The statement of PM Modi of National Education Policy (NEP 2020) coming into effect from 2022 came amid several criticisms against the use of native languages as a medium of instruction that will be undesirable for higher education.
PM further added “I see many people are under the wrong impression on this count. There is no bar on teaching-learning any language, be it English or any global language that helps at the world stage”.
