Sonipat: O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) has marked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Education, Government of India and has been conferred the status of an Institution of Eminence (IoE).
This is a historic recognition for JGU as all administrative, regulatory, and procedural prerequisites under the IoE regulations have been appropriately met, empowering JGU to function as an ‘Institution of Eminence’. The IoE Policy was dispatched to implement the commitment of the Government of India to empower Universities and Higher Educational Institutions to help them become world-class instructing and research institutions. The responsibility of the selection and recommendation of ‘Institutions of Eminence’ was endowed to an Empowered Experts Committee that was appointed by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi.
With the confirmed status as an ‘Institution of Eminence’, JGU has entered a coveted group of top 10 private institutions in the country to be unshackled from regulatory controls and be given full autonomy. The quest for ‘Institutions of Eminence’ began in the year 2017 with the introduction of the ‘UGC (Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2017’ for private institutions and ‘UGC (Declaration of Government Educational Institutions as Institutions of Eminence) Guidelines, 2017’ for public institutions.
On this historic occasion, the Founding Chancellor and benefactor of O.P. Jindal Global University, Mr. Naveen Jindal observed, “I am tremendously charmed that JGU has been conferred with the status of an Institution of Eminence. In October 2020, a Review Meeting was hung on ‘Institutions of Eminence’ under the Chairmanship of the Union Cabinet Minister for Education, Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, following which JGU got the official letter from the Ministry of Education, Government of India conferring the status of the ‘Institution of Eminence’ (IoE). The marking of the MoU with the Ministry of Education of the Government of India was held today, 29 October 2020.
Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice-Chancellor of O.P. Jindal Global University stated, “Today is a special occasion in the history of JGU. With the conferment of the status of an ‘Institution of Eminence’ to JGU, we have gone into India’s own ‘Elite level’ likeness top 10 public and top 10 private institutions.
Therefore, JGU is exempted from most regulatory controls and has been given full autonomy. At the point when JGU was set up in 2009, the goal was extremely simple: to construct a world-class university in India. Professor C. The quest for the Institutions of Eminence began in the year 2017 with the introduction of ‘UGC (Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2017’ for private institutions and ‘UGC (Declaration of Government Educational Institutions as Institutions of Eminence) Guidelines, 2017’ for public institutions. University Grants Commission was entrusted with choosing 10 public universities and 10 private universities that would be leading the vision of expanding the global footprint of Indian advanced education.
A definitive objective for these Institutions of Eminence was to procure world-class status in a couple of years. The University Grants Commission (UGC) got over 100 applications from various educational institutions across the country for the Ministry of Human Resource Development’s (MHRD) ambitious 20 world-class institutions project by December 2017. The Empowered Expert Committee considered a total of 114 applications, 74 from public institutions, and 40 from private institutions, including institutions that were yet to be set up (greenfield category) and shortlisted eight public institutions and three private institutions. Further to which nineteen more institutions were proposed later.
Professor Dabiru Sridhar Patnaik, Registrar, JGU stated, “JGU has consistently aspired to make a world-class university in India and help make global pioneers. Institutions that found a place among the top 50 in the National Institute Ranking Framework rankings or those figuring in the top 500 in certain reputed international evaluations were qualified to apply. In the end, only 10 public and 10 private institutions were chosen. The public universities will get money-related support from the government and on account of the private institutions proposed as Institutions of Eminence, there will be no budgetary support, however, they will be qualified for more autonomy as a special category Deemed University.
