Indian Maritime University-Vizag set to expand its horizons

VISAKHAPATNAM: Indian Maritime University, Visakhapatnam has focused on internalisation and expanding its ties with Indian/foreign Institutions like Indian Navy, Dredging Corporation of India, IIT Madras, Batangas State University (Philippines), International Ocean Institute (Malta), National Institute of Ocean Technology, etc. The institute, which is currently offering several BTech and management programmes in the maritime domain, is planning to introduce BTech shipbuilding and MTech maritime environment from next academic year.
Dean (NAOE) and Director IMU-Visakhapatnam campus, Prof KM Sivakholundu, said that IMU aspires to be the knowledge centre for maritime domain. “Continuous enhancement of infrastructure and expertise are aligned with the government policies and plans such as Maritime India Vision 2030, Blue Economy, and Sagarmala. The existing programs such as Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and Dredging and Harbour engineering, are being revamped to get better aligned with industry needs. New academic programmes such as BTech (naval architecture and shipbuilding) and MTech (maritime environment) will be commenced soon along with short-term training programs for the maritime sector in specialised domains. These training programs will cover varied sub-domains such as hydrographic survey, dredging, post sea courses, and inland vessel operations. State-of-the-art experimental and model-testing facilities including towing tanks and wave basins are also being planned for the future,” said Prof Sivakholundu.
Head of the department (school of naval architecture and ocean engineering) Dr Sheeja Janardhanan and HoD (school of maritime management) Dr N Bhanu Prakash said that IMU is developing various customised courses for various government and private agencies in the domains of operations management, insurance, human resources, etc. “Current initiatives of the school include offering various consultancy assignments in the domains of maritime insurance in collaboration with National Insurance Agency and management training programmes in collaboration with Indian Ports Association for executives of various ports,” said Dr Sheeja and Dr Prakash.
Taking cue from the industry, during the academic year 2022-23, SMM had launched an apprenticeship embedded programme at undergraduate level, BBA (maritime logistics) in collaboration with Logistics Skill Sector Council. This programme, apart from its industry focussed courses in its curriculum, offers the students an opportunity to undergo apprenticeship (with stipend) during the final year of the programme that gives them exposure to the operations of the sector. Thus, this programme allows the students to earn while they are learning and get placed by the end of the programme.
According to officials, the institute is recording about 90% placement in core companies such as shipyards, classification societies, ship designers, dredging companies and consultants. The Visakhapatnam campus functions from two premises – Vangali in Sabbavaram and Gandhigram near Gajuwaka.
