VISAKHAPATNAM: India has emerged as the third-largest global start-up ecosystem and has the third highest number of unicorns, said department of science and technology secretary Dr S Chandrasekhar. India is no more a developing country as it is no less than any other country in innovations, technological development, research work, manufacturing, etc., he said.
Delivering the convocation address at Gitam Deemed to be University as the chief guest here in Visakhapatnam on Saturday, Dr Chandrasekhar said that homo sapiens have abused the planet. “At this juncture, we need to think about how we are going to make the planet sustainable, healthy, and affordable. The Covid-19 pandemic (having its origins in bats) delivers the message that we should keep a close watch on the health of the animals too. The majority of the recent pandemics were passed on to humans from animals. The ongoing lab studies of rapamycin have found that the medication can increase the human lifespan by about 25%. All these factors point to the immediate need of making all our processes green and making the planet sustainable,” said Dr Chandrasekhar.
The university bestowed honorary doctorates on India’s light combat aircraft Tejas chief designer Dr Kota Harinarayana and noted Telugu veteran actress Vanisri.
Dr Kota Harinarayana asked the graduating students to not be afraid of failures. “But failing early leaves more room for learning from failures and moving on to the next phase,” said Harinarayana.
Explaining her nearly five-decade journey in the movie industry, Vanisri asked the students to plant at least 12 saplings a year to make the planet green. “We should take care of the educational needs of children and the health of people from less advantaged backgrounds,” said Vanisri.
A total of 2,769 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 84 research scholars received their degrees during the convocation. The university also presented gold medals to 72 students for their exemplary performance in academics.
GITAM Chancellor Dr Virander Singh Chauhan presided over the convocation. GITAM Vice-Chancellor Prof Dayananda Siddavattam presented the annual report. GITAM president M Sribharath, vice-president Prof M Gangadhara Rao, secretary M Bharadwaja, Registrar Dr D Gunasekaran, Pro vice-chancellors, deans, research scholars, and faculty members participated in the convocation ceremony.
