Govt. Sanctions 4300 Cr. For EWS Reservation

The Center has sanctioned an additional amount of Rs 4,315.1 crore for implementation of the 10% quota for the economically weak (EWS) among the general category across 158 centrally funded higher education institutions. 

In addition to the 1.18 lakh seats that had been included these institutions in 2019, which incorporate the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), there will be another 95,783 seats to be included 2020-21 admission cycle. 

The funds have been released to the institutions for the two-phased EWS quote implementation which incorporates scholarships, salaries of teachers and infrastructure creation.

As per a senior HRD official, “The institutions have almost finished the implementation of the principal period of the EWS quota. The colleges sent their proposals to the ministry. Subsequent to considering the proposals, the legislature sanctioned the additional store to encourage the implementation of the reservation.”

In the 2020-21 academic year, there will be 4,320 additional seats across 23 IITs and 743 additional seats in the IIMs. The 40 central colleges will add near 27,000 seats. IGNOU, which has just included 70,000 seats in the July cycle of admission, will include another 20,000 seats in December 2019 and 60,000 in 2020. 

Of the complete money sanctioned, a noteworthy portion will be utilized for the production of infrastructure. The administration has sanctioned Rs 2,680.18 crore for the purpose, trailed by Rs 917.14 crore for scholarships. The new 10% EWS quota will fundamentally expand admissions to higher education — including world-class ones like IITs, IIMs and NITs — in two-stage stages more than 2019-20 and 2020-21. 

The number of seats on the finish of the implementation of the reservation will improve the admission limit of the IITs from 23,831 to 33,539 while the number of students in the central colleges will increment from 2,09,027 to 2,56,250.
