Government’s Direct Interference will be increased by the New Higher Education Commission Of India : DUTA
The Government’s plan to replace the University Grants Commission (UGC) with the New Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) was today condemned by the Delhi University Teacher’s Association ( DUTA) and said this will lead to increased Government direct interference
The body said that it is unclear why this change is needed and how this new higher education commission will meet the needs of the higher education in India in a better way.
The statement released by the DUTA stated: “ The present structure is being completely replaced without providing a detailed study of it’s founding goals, achievements, it’s shortcomings and their possible reasons and corrective measures taken or required to improve the health of the UGC”.
They also said in a statement that with the HEERA proposal on hold, totally dismantling the UGC to give way to a new Commission is a quick and desperate step going in the same direction.
The Union HRD minister Prakash Javdekar tweeted and informed the people about the decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi about withdrawing the UGC and setting up the HECI. According to the draft, The HECI would focus only on the academic matters and the monetary grants would be the responsibility of the ministry
The New Higher Education Commission Of India will Focus on academic quality, closing and the opening of institutions, powers to ensure compliance with the academic quality standards.
All the educationist, stakeholders, and the general public have been asked by the HRD ministry to give their suggestions and opinions before 5 PM on 7th July on the draft which is published on their website.
