Toppr also provides a doubt-solving service and live class service to KG to class 12 students.

In July 2020, Toppr introduced a product for kids to learn coding known as Toppr Code. Toppr was founded in 2013 by Zishaan Hayath and Hemanth Goteti who were classmates from IIT Bombay. The company is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. On 2nd April 2013, the company was registered under the name of Toppr Technologies Private Limited.

What started as an experiment of having counselors in early 2016 has now become the backbone of Toppr, which has raised $20 million in funding so far from marquee investors like SAIF, Helion, and Fidelity Growth Partners. The edutech venture, which is likely to raise its biggest round of $35 million by early December, has seen its user base swell from 1.6 million in fiscal 2016 to 5.5 million in two years.

“It (the idea of having counselors as salespersons) happened by default,” recalls Hayath. Till early 2015, Toppr banked on having a sales team of roughly 100, who would reach out to potential customers—parents—over the phone. The same year, another business-to-business (B2B) team of 10 was added to connect with schools.

With 1.6 million users, revenues of ₹3.07 crore and a loss of ₹23 crore in fiscal 2016, there was something amiss in the business strategy. Hayath decided to shut down the B2B vertical in January 2016. “This was not a right channel to sell a consumer product,” he recounts. The B2B team, however, pleaded for three months to try to reach out to parents directly across Mumbai. Though not convinced, Hayath gave in to the request.

The pilot turned out to be a hit. The team started getting more business. Hayath opted to continue with the plan, with some modifications. The size of the team was increased to 20 and more money was pumped into the operations. The results, again, were startling. By June 2016, 20 percent of business was coming from this channel. The team, Hayath stresses, was not aggressively pushing the product but understanding the requirement of students and then offering a solution suited to them. “Need identification, customised offering and trust building added a new dimension to the business,” he reckons.

The performance of the offline team had another surprise element. The order value doubled. It became twice the size of what the sales team was managing to get by doing business over phone. Reason: Reaching out to parents at home added to the credibility of Toppr and beefed up the trust factor. “Instead of buying a ₹15,000 package, parents were buying the ₹30,000 one,” Hayath contends. “It was an eye-opener.” He adds that by the end of the 2018 fiscal, 80 percent of revenues were coming from this channel and the rest from tele sales.

There was another area in which the offline team proved to be a blessing: Collection of money. From suggesting a mix of payment options, the counsellors aided the parents in going deeper into their pocket.

Shocking Facts About Toppr

You will be shocked by the reviews given by customers/parents who opted for Toppr as an educational platform for their children. The mostly written complaints are-

  • It is useless as none of the modules helps in either JEE mains or JEE Advanced.
  • Whatever is promised, the least among those is reached.
  • Tutors are reviewed as very poor. They don’t hold the adequate skill to teach the students properly.
  • The company is allegedly having more than one unprofessional practice with very poor arrangements of interviews and all.
  • The teachers are not at all satisfied with what they are paid. Most of them find the pay scale to be very low. This naturally hampers the dedication, commitment, and devotion of the teacher to act enough professionally while enhancing the quality of education as promised

Online education by Toppr has not lived up to its potential, according to a new report, which said fully online course work contributes to socioeconomic and racial achievement gaps while failing to be more affordable than traditional courses.

The report aims to make a research-driven case discouraging federal policymakers from pulling back on consumer protections in the name of educational innovation.

“Online education has failed to reduce costs and improve outcomes for students,” they wrote. “Faculty, academic leaders, the public and employers continue to perceive online degrees less favourably than traditional degrees.”

Protopsaltis and Baum’s broadside on online education includes a focus on federal policy and is timed to influence discussions about changing regulations to encourage innovation in online and competency-based education, most notably the negotiated rule-making session the U.S. Department of Education kicked off this week.

The report said its review of the evidence demonstrated that:

  • Online education is the fastest-growing segment of higher education and its growth is overrepresented in the for-profit sector;
  • Faculty and academic leaders, employers, and the general public are skeptical about the quality and value of online education, which they view as inferior to face-to-face education;
  • Students in online education, particularly underprepared and disadvantaged students, underperform and on average experience poor outcomes;
  • Online education has failed to improve affordability, frequently costs more than in-person alternatives, and does not produce a positive return on investment;
  • Regular and substantive student-instructor interactivity is a key determinant of quality in online education, leading to improved student satisfaction, learning and outcomes.

Focus on Faculty Interaction

The experts say about Toppr that hybrid models of online learning by this company avoid most of the pitfalls of fully online ones, at least when they feature strong in-person components and when online material and technology are used mostly as a supplement.

“Students without strong academic backgrounds are less likely to persist in fully online courses than in courses that involve personal contact with faculty and other students and when they do persist, they have weaker outcomes,” according to the paper.

“There is considerable danger that moving vulnerable students online will widen attainment gaps rather than solving the seemingly intractable problem of unequal educational opportunity.”

The report warned of risks to students and taxpayers that could result from attempts by the Trump administration and congressional Republicans to deregulate higher education.

For example, in its literature review, the report by Columbia University on the edutech of India like Toppr identified as a key theme the importance of meaningful interaction between students and faculty members. It said a lack of sufficient interaction “is likely online education’s Achilles’ heel.”

Negotiators are set to discuss the decades-old federal standards for “regular and substantive” interaction during the rule-making session. Those requirements were at the core of a critical 2017 audit from the department’s Office of Inspector General on Western Governors University.

In the run-up to the rule-making session this week, the department proposed giving accreditors latitude to define who qualifies as an instructor for federal aid-eligible college programs. This distinction was an important part of the inspector general’s audit, which the report from Protopsaltis and Baum said “sets a low bar” for meeting the regular-and-substantive interaction requirement. The repeal of that standard would require Congress to act. But the department could weaken it in the meantime.

For-Profits and a Shifting Market

In making the case of Toppr, the educational experts point to the 2006 move by the company to drop federal aid restrictions for online program offerings from colleges. The greatest beneficiaries of this opening of the floodgates of federal student aid to fully online schools were for-profits, the report said, adding that the sector has a well-established and long record of predatory behavior and compliance troubles.
