INTRODUCTION

Today’s era of modernization has not only inclined the upcoming generations towards western cultures, but has also grown their high hopes from India Education System as well. And of course, western universities are acquiring more popularity because of their advanced infrastructure.

India has given the oldest university in the world, back in the fifth century. It was Nalanda University, which was primarily a Buddhist monastery that worked as a university; set up at Bihar (then Maghada). The old university site still lays in rubble around 95 km southeast Patna. However, before any other country; various other educational institutes were built across India. 10 oldest universities in India. It is India’s first institute to be granted the status to be known as a university and also the oldest. This university was established with the motive of giving education in Arts and Sciences to the students, despite caste, color or country. Today, it offers studies related to only Theology/Divinity with 52 colleges under its affiliation all over India.

University of Calcutta

2. University of Calcutta (West Bengal)

Description: The University of Calcutta holds the second rank amongst the 10 oldest universities in India. Description: The University of Madras holds the fourth rank amongst the 10 oldest universities in India. This university was integrated by an act of the Legislative Council of India. This university has been given ‘five-star’ accreditation from NAAC and therefore, is one of the major centers of learning in South India. Today, this university offers 233 plus courses under 87 academic departments categorized under 19 schools, covering different diverse fields like sciences, social sciences, humanities, management, and medicine. It also has around 109 colleges under its affiliation.

Aligarh Muslim University

5. Aligarh Muslim University (Uttar Pradesh)

Description: Aligarh Muslim University has the fifth rank in 10 oldest universities in India. In the beginning, AMU was under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta for the matriculate examination but became an affiliate of Allahabad University in 1885. In 1877, the school was upgraded to the college level and the foundation stone of the college building was laid by Lord Lytton. AMU is an institution that is conferred with the Institute of National Importance provided under the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution at its commencement.

This University has more than 75 with around 15 centers departments of teaching and research for teaching. This covers more than 550 acres of the campus area in Chandigarh. Allahabad University

7. Allahabad University (Uttar Pradesh)

Description: Allahabad University has the seventh rank in 10 oldest universities in India. At one point of time, it was also called the Oxford of the East. In, 2005 its Central University status was restored through the University Allahabad Act 2005   of the Parliament of India. This premier institute covers courses from various fields such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, and Medicine. Banaras Hindu University

Description: Banaras Hindu University holds the eighth rank amongst the 10 oldest universities in India. It was established by Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1916. It is honored with the title of the largest residential university in Asia as it has over 30,000 students residing in its campus.

9. University of Mysore (Karnataka)

Established: 1916 (103 years old)

Description: The University of Mysore has the ninth rank in 10 oldest universities in India.   It came into recognition from the University Grants Commission. It holds around 122 colleges under its affiliation. The University of Mysore is renowned for its library all over India which has more than 800,000+ books, 2,400 journal titles, and 100,000 volumes of journals.

Patna University

Description: Patna University holds the tenth rank amongst the 10 oldest universities in India. The university has been honored with the Directorate of Distance Education for conducting postgraduate studies in distance education since 1974. Its Central Library has a collection of 4, 00,000 volumes of textbooks and reference books, 87 periodicals, and 50,000 back journals. It also includes over 5000 valuable old rare manuscripts; mostly used by research scholars.
