What is Times Higher Education Ranking?
Times Higher Education University Rankings is an annual publication by Times Higher Education (THE) magazine. The Publication publishes World University Rankings every year based on their criteria.
World University Rankings 2020
Just like every year, The THE magazine published their Times Higher Education university rankings for the year 2020. This time this ranking included almost 1400 universities across 92 countries. The ranking is based on various performance indicators by which the institution’s performance is been measured. There are 13 indicators across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
The University of Oxford secured the first place for the fourth year in a row. While the university which rose three places from last year successfully secured the rank two, The California Institute of Technology.
Stanford, Yale, Harvard and Imperial College London appears in the Top Ten List.
India’s Position in Times Higher Education Ranking 2020
Despite the constant improvement in Indian Education Standards, Indian universities failed to rank in the Top 300 universities of Times Higher Education 2020.
Six Indian Universities secured places among top 500 universities as per the Times Higher Education Ranking.
The highest-ranking Indian University is IIT-Ropar, which managed to secure place in the 301-350 band.
Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, Sarit Das said, the university is conducting interviews to recruit young academics who are currently employed or those who recently completed their postdocs, from London, Toronto, Chigaco, Boston, Sydney and Singapore Universities. He added, “We are holding interviews there only and give offers to the competent candidates to join IIT Ropar”.
For the first time, no Indian University Ranked in The Top 300 of the ranking since 2012. Back in 2012, only one institution, IIT-Bombay, was ranked from the country.
India’s place in the ranking has improved. Earlier in 2016, only 17 universities were featured among the top 800. This year the number rises to 23.
To this Das Says,
“Higher education in India is undergoing substantial change”.
According to Hindustan Times, last year, IISc was the only Indian Institute to enter the top 300 list, dropped to 301-350 group due to ‘significant fall in its research citation impact.
As per the Times of India reports, IITs Mumbai, Delhi and Kharagpur secured a place in the 401-500 group. IIT Kharagpur and IIT Delhi rose by 100 ranks from the past year.
THE ranking editor, Elite Bothwell, told Live Mint,
“India has a huge amount of potential in global higher education, given its rapidly growing youth population and economy and use of English-language instruction. However, it is disappointing to see the country fall out of the top 300 of the rankings this year, with only a small number of institutions registering progress.”
