The Punjabi University is yet to form a committee comprising of experts who will be deciding the evaluation criteria of the intermediate students who got promoted this year.

The Punjabi University situated in Patiala has not yet decided on the evaluation criteria to declare the passing marks or CGPA of the intermediate students who got promoted this year. The Punjabi University is yet to form a committee comprising of experts who will be deciding the evaluation criteria of the intermediate students who got promoted this year.

On 21st July 2020, the Punjabi university announced to promote the intermediate students to the next year. However, the mandatory condition for the promotion of the students as they should have registered with the university for the next year/ semester. Provided that the students should have submitted the examination form for May 2020 exams.

The university authorities later stated that students who will be having average marks/ grades/ CGPA less than the decided passing marks /grades /CGPA will have to fulfill certain conditions or requirements to clear that semester or class as and when they are held to become eligible for the award of the degree. If at any point in time the university founds a student to be ineligible or doesn’t fulfill the evaluation criteria to sit in May 2020 exams the promotion of that student will stand canceled.

Jaswinder Singh Khatter, who is the examination controller at Punjabi University stated that “We are working on a formula, as per the guidelines of the state government. A panel of experts will be formed soon to take a decision. We also started online classes on August 1. We are studying the methods applied by other educational institutions, including GNDU, in the promotion of intermediate students”.

However, wavering is there among students of terminal or intermediate year as no decision has been taken so far on their exams. There are around 78000 students who are to sit for the exam this year from the colleges and private institutions affiliated to Punjabi University. The University Grants Commission has asked all the universities to conduct exams by the end of September for the final year students.

Rahul Bhandari, Punjab secretary of higher education conferred that the Punjab government has already requested the Centre to reconsider the UGC instructions.
