NIT Andhra Pradesh Faculty Publishes Book on ‘Discrete Mathematics & Applications’

National Institute of Technology Andhra Pradesh Assistant Professor Dr. Karthick Seshadri has authored a book on ‘Discrete Mathematics with Applications.’ It is a key prerequisite for emerging courses such as Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science, among others.

This textbook was published by Cengage. Prof. C.S.P. Rao, Director, NIT Andhra Pradesh, released the book in presence of the Deans, Heads of various Departments, and faculty of NIT Andhra Pradesh. It was co-authored with Dr. K. Viswanathan Iyer, who was a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, NIT Trichy.

This book is suitable to be used as a textbook for the Discrete Mathematics course which is typically offered as part of the B.Tech and MCA programs.

This book accompanies a digital learning App that provides access to equipment in the form of flashcards, practice problems, and laboratory exercises.

INNOVATION IN TEXTBOOKS

Appreciating Dr. Karthick Seshadri for this accomplishment, Prof. C.S.P Rao, Director, NIT Andhra Pradesh, mentioned, “It is important for faculty of higher learning institutes to publish textbooks to disseminate innovative pedagogical content and experiential learning to the stakeholders of technical education. I am happy to state that several textbooks are in the pipeline to be published by the faculty of NIT Andhra Pradesh.”

Mostly, textbooks on niche domains in Computer Science provide a brief exposure to many of the applicable elementary concepts in Mathematics.

Many subjects, such as Algorithms and Cryptography, demand a simple and experimental understanding of basic concepts in mathematical sciences and this book will accomplish such a requirement.

HIGHLIGHTS OF NIT TEXTBOOK

Highlighting the unique aspects of the book, Dr. Karthick Seshadri, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, NIT Andhra Pradesh, said, “I thank my director for motivating and supporting me in the pursuit of my academic aspirations.

The book is written in an easy-to-comprehend style used for demonstrating many mathematical constructs and contains examples to clarify many abstract concepts useful in the study of Computer Science. Many formal arguments are introduced in a student-friendly manner and numerous exercises are provided to assess the understanding of the content covered.

I thank my co-author, Dr. K. Viswanathan Iyer, and wish to acknowledge the support of the editorial team in Cengage comprising Vineet Sharma, Rahul Kumar, and Sanjay Singh.”

NIT BOOK CHAPTERS

The book is organized into six chapters, one each on Logic, Functions & Relations; Combinatorics; Basic Group Theory, Graph Theory; and Finite Automata (traditionally, this belongs to the theory of computing), and Discrete Probability Theory.

The concepts introduced in this book will help students in problem-solving and applying the concepts learned to other areas of Computer Science.
