Yadapadithaya retires, Jayaraj Amin takes charge as acting Mangalore University VC


Mangaluru: Mangalore University vice-chancellor PS Yadapadithaya retired on Friday, after serving in the post for four years.
The state government has appointed Jayaraj Amin, professor and chairman of the political science department, Mangalagangothri, as the acting vice-chancellor, who took charge from Yadapadithaya on Friday evening. Amin has a teaching experience of three decades. He has also served in various capacities at Mangalore University.
Kishore Kumar CK, registrar, Mangalore University, said that the most senior dean or chairman is considered for the post of acting VC. A total of four names had been sent to the government, and they have finalised Jayaraj Amin. “If no permanent selection of VC is done at the earliest, Amin can continue to remain as acting VC till March 2024,” said Kumar.
‘I have done my best’
Yadapadithaya said that a four-year tenure as vice-chancellor was a rich learning experience for him. “More importantly, the pandemic was an eye opener for me to serve others. I had to face several odds after taking charge as vice-chancellor, but have overcome them. Also, being vice-chancellor from the same university one is from, has its own advantages and disadvantages,” expressed Yadapadithaya, adding that he is the first VC of Mangalore University, who studied and worked on the same campus.
Govt yet to appoint a chairman for the search committee.
The process of selecting a new VC of the university starts with the government announcing a search committee. Though a search committee is formed, the government is yet to appoint a chairman for the same.
Sources from Mangalore University added that currently there are four people in the race for the VC’s post. Among them, two are already due for retirement. According to the rules, a person who is in the race for the VC’s post should have a minimum teaching experience of 10 years as a professor in a university.
