Lucknow: Children of state-run schools in UP will now go beyond textbooks to learn English language and develop their speaking skills.
The Prayagraj-based English Language Teaching Institute (ELTI) has prepared videos that are aimed at providing an environment of English language, developing oral skills (listening and speaking), expanding word power (meanings and pronunciation) and developing comprehension and imagination power of kids. There will be 30 videos based on different situations and themes and have plenty of conversation. Initially, it will be for students of class six to eight of government schools and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV). The step is one of the several measures taken by the education department to strengthen English education in the state.
Earlier, spoken English training was provided to teachers and infotainment audios were circulated to schools for kids to master the English language with ease.
According to ELTI principal Skand Shukla, every video, uploaded on Diksha portal, consists of three parts. The first part will deal with introduction and exposition of difficult words – pronunciation with their meaning, the second part will be the main video focussing on conversation. In the third part, there will be practice sessions and exercises.
Each video will be of 10 to 12 minutes’ duration. This includes two minutes for introduction, five minutes for the video and three minutes for practice sessions and exercises. “The videos will be in English and will have subtitles too. The biggest experiment we are doing is to bring our government schoolchildren in these videos. And I must say that our students are doing well in both speaking and acting. Also, we have our own (government teachers) conversing with these kids,” said Shukla.
The practice session, said Shukla, consists of exercises like roleplay, comprehension questions, multiple choice arrangement of sentences, fill in the blanks etc. In addition, there will be an accompanying handbook for the videos. In the handbook, there will be a presentation of difficult words (pronunciation and meaning), text, and practice sessions.
