BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Thursday sanctioned Rs 10 crore for the development of a memorial for Pandit Raghunath Murmu, who has developed the Ol Chiki script for the Santali language.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik announced this on Thursday. Murmu is widely known for his contribution towards language and literature of Santali society. He has strengthened the identity of the Santali language by developing Ol Chiki script, a recognised one.
Murmu’s creation in the Santali language is a milestone in the history of the Santal people. To pay respect to this litterateur, the state government has named a medical college at Baripada after Murmu. It has also declared Murmu’s death anniversary, which falls on Buddha Purnima, as a government holiday.
VK Pandian, secretary to CM (5T), had visited Murmu’s village at Dandbosh and his house at Baripada in Mayurbhanj district in March. He had discussed with Santali people about the development of Murmu’s memorial.
Naveen has approved the plan submitted by the district administration. According to the plan, Rs 75 lakh will be spent for development of Samadhi Peetha of Murmu at Dandbosh and Kapiburu. A meditation centre will be established there at the cost of Rs 75 lakh. While the government will spend Rs 3 crore for construction of the boundary wall and connecting road of Kapiburu, Rs 2 crore will be spent for research centre and auditorium.
The memorial will have dormitories and other facilities for tourists with an expenditure of Rs 1 crore. The remaining amount will be spent for entry gate, beautification, development of pond, drinking water and electrification of the memorial place, said the official sources.
The Works department will execute this project. Naveen directed concerned officials to complete the project very soon.
