Punjabi varsity conducts research on turning news into sign language


CHANDIGARH: The department of computer science, Punjabi University, Patiala, has done research on converting news into sign language through an animated video system.
The research work by a scholar at the department, Annu Rani. has been published for patent, considered the first step in the process of obtaining a patent. She is doing PhD research work under the supervision of Dr Vishal Goyal, professor of the department and Dr Lalit Goyal, associate professor, DAV College, Jalandhar.
Prof Goyal said that the research work mainly related to finding a technical way to automatically convert news into sign language through an animated video system. Doing so can benefit to hearing-impaired people because news content in sign language can be made available to them on a regular basis through this technology, he said.
Annu Rani said that she had also visited the Deaf and Blind School in Patiala to evaluate the system developed in this regard. She said that through this technology communication was created with hearing-impaired students and school teachers. The sentences required for testing have been selected from various news channels to validate this news telecast system. A total of 1112 news sentences were tested, and 79.94% accuracy has been seen in the English news telecast system.
