NIRF 2023: Andhra Pradesh institutions put up poor show in NIRF rankings

Visakhapatnam: The higher educational institutions of Andhra Pradesh put up a poor show in the national institutional ranking framework-2023 (NIRF-2023), the results of which were released on Monday. Andhra University was the only institute to find a place in the list of top-100 institutions of the country, apart from Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation University.
However, Andhra University has been consistently slipping in its ranking in the overall category for the last several years – from 29th place in 2019 to 36th place in 2020 to 48th place in 2021 to 71st position in 2022 to 76th position in 2023. Even in the universities’ category, the ranking of Andhra University has slid to 43 (from 16 in 2019 to 19 in 2020 to 24 in 2021 to 36 in 2022). Sri Venkateswara University (92nd rank) was in the top-100 institutions’ list in 2021. But the institute could not achieve the feat in the last two years.
KL University (28), Andhra University (43), Sri Venkateswara University (60), Vignan’s Foundation for Science, Technology and Research (75) were the institutions that have made it to the top-100 universities’ list.
No institute from Andhra Pradesh could find a place in the top-100 research institutions’ or colleges’ category.
KL University has got 44th place in the engineering category, followed by Indian Institute of Technology (59), Vignan’s Foundation for Science, Technology and Research (85), and Andhra University College of Engineering (94).
Andhra University College of Pharmaceutical Sciences clinched 22nd spot in the pharmacy category. As many as 9 colleges/institutions of Andhra Pradesh have made it to the top-100 in this segment.
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras topped the overall NIRF-2023 rankings, followed by Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
The poor faculty-student ratio at the state universities of Andhra Pradesh is affecting their NIRF (national institutional ranking framework) rankings. The ratings are given based on parameters such as ‘teaching, learning and resources’ (TLR), research and professional practice, graduation outcome, outreach and inclusivity, and perception. Faculty-student ratio with emphasis on permanent faculty is one of the key components.
The contract and guest faculty, who compensate for the regular faculty in the state universities, do not count in the rankings. Same is the case with their research contribution. Hence, the score in the TLR parameter has reduced from previous year for the majority of the state institutions that have participated in NIRF-2023.
Andhra University Registrar Prof V Krishna Mohan said that AU has achieved a slot in the 11-50 band in the innovation category of the rankings. “NIRF announced rankings in this category for the first time and the institute though it’s A-Hub could get it. Andhra University stood first in all categories among all the state universities,” said Prof Krishna Mohan.
