The state of Andhra Pradesh is set to witness a significant boost in its healthcare infrastructure with the inauguration of five new medical colleges in August. According to Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Vidadala Rajini, classes in these colleges will commence from September, contributing to an increase in the total number of MBBS seats in the state to 2,935.
Emphasizing the importance of healthcare, Minister Rajini stated that Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has given utmost priority to this sector. The establishment of five medical colleges within a span of just five years is a remarkable achievement, setting a new record in the state’s history.
These colleges, located in Vizianagaram, Eluru, Nandyala, Machilipatnam, and Rajamahendravaram, will each have 150 MBBS seats, adding 750 seats to the existing 2,185. Minister Rajini highlighted that in the past 100 years, only 11 medical colleges were established by previous governments. However, under the leadership of Chief Minister Reddy, the construction of 17 new colleges has begun in just four years, with a budget of Rs 8,500 crore.
Additionally, Minister Rajini mentioned that the remaining 12 colleges will also start functioning in the next few years. This development is expected to benefit the students of Andhra Pradesh, as it eliminates the need for them to relocate to other states for pursuing medical education. Furthermore, the number of post-graduate seats has also seen a significant increase, rising from 926 in 2019 to 1,388 at present, providing more opportunities for specialization.
