54k students admitted under RTE Act in round 1 in Gujarat


The state director of primary education has admitted 54,903 children in Class 1 under the Right to Education Act, 2009. The department has accepted 68,118 applications for admission in private schools under the RTE Act this year. The department had received 98,501 applications for admission in Class 1 of which 64,976 of these applications were approved while 14,532 were rejected for lack of documents or for filing wrong documents.
The statement of the department said that the 27,917 RTE reserved seats are still vacant in the state which will be filled in the second round. The statement said that the parents whose children have been admitted will have to visit the schools with their original documents and confirm their admission latest by May 13.
Parents of these children were given three days’ time to make corrections in their rejected applications. At the end of the deadline 6,074 applicants made corrections in their applications and their applications were accepted. However, 8,458 applicants did not make changes so their applications were rejected, a department statement said.
Apart from this, the department had rejected 18,993 applications that were found to be not eligible.
The registrations for admissions began from April 10 and the last date for registration was April 22. The deadline for making corrections in the applications was April 27.
Under the RTE Act, private primary schools must admit students from financially weaker families on 25% of their total available seats. The state government will admit 83,326 students in private schools in the academic year 2023-24. These seats are from 9,855 schools across the state.
The department said that of these available seats, 42,021 seats are in Gujarati medium schools, 37,775 are in English medium schools and the remaining 3,530 seats are of Urdu, Marathi, Hindi, and Oriya language schools. Last year, the state government admitted students to 71,396 seats.
