Indian youngsters wishing to continue their higher education in the United Kingdom will now have it easier to do so, as they will no longer need to go through the hurdles of having their qualifications recognized through different procedures.
Last week, on July 21, representatives of the governments of both countries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the mutual recognition of qualifications issued by universities located in the UK and India, which will be valid for subsequent periods of five years ad infinitum unless terminated by either of the signatories of the agreement.
According to a statement of the UK government’s Department for International Trade issued following the signing of the agreement, the latter means that A-levels and their equivalents, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, will now be recognized in India, Erduera.com reports.
“It will allow Indian students who graduate from British universities to apply for postgraduate qualifications, or embark on government careers that require university qualifications, when they return home,” the statement highlights.
It further states that the MoU will make the UK an even more alluring study destination for Indian students, which will result in an economic boost to the country, as the government asserts that the UK benefits around £109,000 per non-EU student coming to the country.
Commenting on the agreement, the Secretary of State for Education James Cleverly said that international education is one of the finest exports of the UK.
“This agreement builds on our UK-India partnership and removes barriers so even more of the best and brightest students from India can study here, boosting our economy and enriching our campuses and communities,” he said regarding the agreement.
He also noted that the MoU, which became effective on the same day it was signed, creates more opportunities for UK students to study in India while also delivering more degrees to one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic nations in the world.
The Chief Executive of the Universities UK International (UUKi), Vivienne Stern MBE, on the other hand, has called the agreement a landmark and historic, putting the emphasis on the importance of the recognition of UK Masters’ in India.
“Qualifications students receive will be recognized on both sides, making it easier for students to progress in education and move into jobs. The recognition of UK Masters’ is a particularly important development,” she said.
Stern also explained that as a result of the agreement, Indian graduates of the UK’s universities will now receive formal recognition of their degrees obtained from UK universities and will have access to jobs in the public sector in India.
According to data published by the UK Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), during the academic year 2020/21, 84,555 Indian students were enrolled at universities in the UK, which is an increase of 11 percent, or 8,660 more than in the previous year.
