49 Indian Universities in the list of rankings 2018 in comparison to 42 in 2017 which include more than 1250 universities worldwide.
Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Banglore holds its position and still on top of the list of Indian Universities in
Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2019. As an impressive debut entry by
IIT Indore (Indian Institute of Technology Indore) becomes the second highest ranked University of India. With its strong scores for research volume and impact, it was described as a global top 400th institution in the times ranking.
IIT Bombay has been overtaken by IIT Indore, as IIT Bombay slipped from the 351-400 rankings band to the 401-500 bands.
In this year’s Asia University ranking,
IISc Bangalore was in the 29th position. In the rank band of 251-300, the position is shared by IISc with Universities like Jacobs University, Germany and University of Illinois, Chicago among others according to times ranking.
According to The Times Ranking the country’s top five Universities-
- The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore
- IIT Indore
- IIT Bombay
- IIT Roorkee
- Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeswara University from Karnataka making a debut this year.
“Our efforts in making research the focus of the institute is now reflected in the form of citation and other impact metrics of research,” said Pradeep Mathur, Director IIT Indore.
Phil Baty, Editorial Director of Global Rankings for ‘Times Higher Education’ said:
“India’s bursting with innovation and ambition – the nation has serious potential to grow into a leading player in global higher education. But while it increases its presence again in this year’s table, the majority of its universities remain immobile or decline, struggling against increased global competition – particularly from East Asia.
NIT Rourkela, Amongthe NITs, has been the first in the country; in the band of 601-800. The institute was on 126th position in the Asia University ranking 2018. NIT Tiruchirapalli, the other one is in the category is in 801-1000 rank band.
Top 5 Universities according to ‘Times Higher Education World University Rankings Globally are-
- Oxford University
- Cambridge University
- Stanford University
- The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (raised to 4th)
- California Institute of Technology (Caltech)(Dropped from 3rd to 5th position)
According to the times ranking list Top Universities in Asia, China’s Tsinghua University ranks the first, the National University of Singapore has slipped down to the position of being second and India’s top university IISc ranks in 29th.

“India’s 33 institutes have found place in 1000 best of the world institutes in The World University Rankings at THEworldunirank . Last year there were only 30 Indian institutes. This year 8 new institutes have made their place in the top 1000 of THEworldunirank . Congratulations to all of them. The annual World University Rankings are drawn from the database of university performance metrics of ‘Times Higher Education’, with over 150 separate data points on each of the world’s leading research universities and two global surveys of senior, published scholars from the annual reputation survey.
