The Tamil Naidu government on Thursday promoted all the college students without exams except for the final year students.
All the college students of the 1st and 2nd year got promoted to the next academic year without having to appear for exams. The government of Tamil Naidu said that due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic it wasn’t possible for them to conduct exams of all college students. So they have promoted all the college students of the 1st and 2nd year only.
The exams of 1st and 2nd year students were scheduled to begin from May 2020. He also mentioned that such students who got promoted to the next academic year should be awarded marks as per the AICTE and UGC guidelines.
Edappadi K. Palaniswami the chief minister of Tamil Naidu stated that “These students are exempted from writing the semester exams (May 2020). They should be awarded marks followed by UGC and AICTE guidelines”.
Besides the students of the final year, all the students pursuing courses such as BA, BSc, MA, MSc, BE/Bech, ME/ M.Tech, MCA, and diploma courses have been promoted to the next academic year.
Also, the state government of Tamil Naidu has formed an 11 member panel. The panel would be finalizing the procedure and strategy of holding of final year exams of students.
The chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said that “The higher level panel suggested that there is no possibility of conducting exams due to the COVID-19 spread”.
Edappadi K. Palaniswami added by saying that a detailed government order would be issued by the higher education department on the matter.
As per the sources, the higher education department has claimed that they could not cancel the final year exams due to the instructions from the University Grants Commission (UGC). Universities said that they are preparing to hold the final year exams by the end of September as per the UGC guidelines. They are not facing any hindrance in the procedure of holding exams.
