Unit I : Number System
1. Real numbers
Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic – Proof of irreducibility of, after illustrating and motivating by means of statements and examples, after review of earlier work.
Unit II: Algebra
1. Polynomial
Relation between zeroes and coefficients of quadratic polynomials.
2. Pair of linear equations in two variables
Pair of linear equations in two variables and graphical method of their solution, consistency/inconsistency. Algebraic conditions for the number of solutions. Algebraic solution of a pair of linear equations in two variables – by substitution, by elimination. Simple situational problems.
3. Quadratic equation
Standard form of the quadratic equation ax 2 + bx + c = 0, (a ≠ 0). Solution of quadratic equations (real roots only) by factorisation, and by using the quadratic formula.
4. Arithmetic Progressions
Motivation to study arithmetic progressions Derivation of nth term and sum of first n terms of an AP and their application in solving daily life problems.
Unit III: Coordinate Geometry
Coordinate Geometry
Review Concepts of coordinate geometry, Graphs of linear equations, distance formula, Section formula (internal division).
Unit IV: Geometry
A. Triangle
1. (Prove) If a line parallel to one side of a triangle is drawn to intersect the other two sides at distinct points, then the other two sides are divided in the same ratio.
2. If a line divides two sides of a triangle in the same ratio, then the line is parallel to the third side.
3. If the corresponding angles of two triangles are equal, their corresponding sides are proportional and the triangles are similar.
4. If the corresponding sides of two triangles are proportional, then their corresponding angles are equal and the two triangles are similar.
5. If an angle of one triangle is equal to an angle of another triangle and the sides joining these angles are proportional, then the two triangles are similar.
B. Circles
1. A tangent to a circle at any point is perpendicular to the radius passing through the point of contact.
2. (Prove) The lengths of tangents drawn from an external point to a circle are equal.
Unit V: Trigonometry
1. Introduction to Trigonometry
Trigonometric ratios of acute angles of a right triangle. The proof of their existence motivates the (well defined) ratio whatever is defined at 0o and 90o. Relation between the value ratios of the trigonometric ratios of 300, 450 and 600.
2. Trigonometric Identities
Proof and application of the identity sin 2 A + cos 2 A = 1 Only simple identities are to be given. 3 Height and Distances Angle of Elevation Angle of Depression (10) Simple problems on Heights and Distances. Problems should not involve more than two right triangles. The elevation/depression angle should be only 30° 45 and 60°.
Unit VI Mensuration
1. Areas related to Circles
Areas of sectors and segments of a circle. Problems based on area and perimeter/perimeter of the above plane figures. (Problems in calculating the area of a segment of a circle should be confined to central angles of 60°, 90° and 120° only.
2. Surface Area and Volume
Surface area and volume of combinations of any two of the following: Cube, cuboid, sphere, hemisphere and right circular cylinder/cone.
Unit VII: Statistics and Probability
1. Statistics
Mean, median and mode of grouped data (bi-modal situation should be avoided).
2. Probability
Classical Definition of Probability Simple problems of finding the probability of an event.
