After making attendance compulsory for JNU students, On Friday the Jawahar Lal Nehru university made it necessary for the teachers to mark the attendance every day. This decision was taken during the 146th academic council meeting held on Friday with a view to bring some major improvements in the university’s research and academic activities. The members of the JNU Students Union were absent from the academic council meeting for the first time as they were not invited because of the ongoing inquiry against them for an indiscipline act in the last meeting of the academic council. In a statement issued by JNU, it says “While JNU had already implemented the rules of attendance for students and administrative staff, the 146th AC meeting through its resolution has made attendance mandatory for the teaching community as well, JNU faculty need to give attendance at least once in a day,” The academic council also decided that from now onwards at the beginning of every semester, during the registration process an undertaking will have to be signed by all the new and the existing students that they will follow the attendance regulations. Digital Entrance Exam The academic council also decided to make the JNU entrance exam completely digital, i.e. computer based. This decision was opposed by a number of teachers who argued that this won’t be financially viable and suitable for some courses. This decision was also appraised by some members who said that this decision will make the JNU admission process more efficient, secure, bias-free and fairer. A two-year M.Sc. degree program in Mathematics in the school of physical sciences was also approved by the academic council in the meeting. A student-friendly decision was also taken by the academic council making it necessary for the teachers to show the corrected answer script of all exams to students before preparing the final result.
